Climate Smart Education
One Pikin One Tree Project
The One Pikin One Tree Project aims to promote climate education and combat climate change, raising awareness about climate change in schools and rural communities throughout Sierra Leone. We have brought this initiative to nearly a dozen schools within Bo district, promoting a sustainable environment through our recycled trash cans and tree planting programs. Our Inter-Secondary-School Debate motivates students to explore solutions in climate change adaptation and mitigation. Additionally, it raises awareness on our national policies like the NDCs, NAP, and advocates for inclusive participation of vulnerable communities, particularly women, children, and youth. By equipping schools with these resources, we aim to empower students to be environmental stewards in their communities.
The Eco-School Initiative
The Eco-School Initiative is a nine-month youth-centered program launched in Bo City with support from the Bo City Council through their Youth Climate Action Fund, funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies. Designed to empower the next generation of climate leaders, the initiative will directly benefit 1,000 students across five schools in Bo City.
The program combines mentorship, skills training, and advocacy to build student capacity in climate action:
-
Climate Mentorship – Students are paired with experienced mentors who guide their climate journey, nurture leadership development, and encourage personal growth.
-
Skill Development – Participants gain hands-on experience in climate-smart agriculture, environmental literacy, eco-innovation, and entrepreneurship.
-
Advocacy & Voice – Students are empowered to participate in climate dialogue, raise awareness in their communities, and influence environmental policies in Sierra Leone.
By fostering knowledge, creativity, and civic engagement, the Eco-School Initiative strengthens youth leadership in addressing climate change and building a sustainable future for Sierra Leone.
